Succinct Indices for Range Queries with Applications to Orthogonal Range Maxima

چکیده
We consider the problem of preprocessing N points in 2D, each endowed with a priority, to answer the following queries: given a axis-parallel rectangle, determine the point with the largest priority in the rectangle. Using the ideas of the effective entropy of range maxima queries and succinct indices for range maxima queries, we obtain a structure that uses O(N) words and answers the above query in O(lgN lg lgN) time. This is a direct improvement of Chazelle’s result from 1985 [11] for this problem – Chazelle required O(N/ ) words to answer queries in O((lgN) ) time for any constant > 0.

Succinct Indices for Path Minimum, with Applications to Path Reporting
In the path minimum query problem, we preprocess a tree on n weighted nodes, such that given an arbitrary path, we can locate the node with the smallest weight along this path. We design novel succinct indices for this problem; one of our index structures supports queries in O(α(m,n)) time, and occupiesO(m) bits of space in addition to the space required for the input tree, where m is an intege...
متن کاملRange Median of Minima Queries, Super-Cartesian Trees, and Text Indexing
A Range Minimum Query asks for the position of a minimal element between two specified array-indices. We consider a natural extension of this, where our further constraint is that if the minimum in a query interval is not unique, then the query should return an approximation of the median position among all positions that attain this minimum. We present a succinct preprocessing scheme using onl...
متن کاملArray Range Queries
Array range queries are of current interest in the field of data structures. Given an array of numbers or arbitrary elements, the general array range query problem is to build a data structure that can efficiently answer queries of a given type stated in terms of an interval of the indices. The specific query type might be for the minimum element in the range, the most frequently occurring elem...
متن کاملLRM-Trees: Compressed Indices, Adaptive Sorting, and Compressed Permutations
LRM-Trees are an elegant way to partition a sequence of values into sorted consecutive blocks, and to express the relative position of the first element of each block within a previous block. They were used to encode ordinal trees and to index integer arrays in order to support range minimum queries on them. We describe how they yield many other convenient results in a variety of areas: compres...
متن کاملSuccinct Orthogonal Range Search Structures on a Grid with Applications to Text Indexing
We present a succinct representation of a set of n points on an n × n grid using n lg n + o(n lg n) bits to support orthogonal range counting in O(lg n/ lg lg n) time, and range reporting in O(k lg n/ lg lg n) time, where k is the size of the output. This achieves an improvement on query time by a factor of lg lg n upon the previous result of Mäkinen and Navarro [1], while using essentially the...
